Not Called…or Not Heard the Call

The opportunity to preach and teach in many churches and schools is a great privilege that we do not take

lightly. In conversing with pastors, missionaries, laymen, and young people, some of the most-often

asked questions are regarding a call from God.

I certainly do not believe that simply volunteering for the mission field is what the Lord shows us in His

Word, but I believe that the prevailing problem of a lack of laborers lies with us, as Christians – and not

with God. As in the day of Jeremiah, God still seeks for men but finds none…or at least very few.

What can be done? General William Booth of the Salvation Army said it so well when he gave the

following remedy over 150 years ago:

“Not called!” did you say? “Not heard the call,” I think you should say.

Put your ear down to the Bible, and hear Him bid you go and pull sinners out of the fire of sin.

Put your ear down to the burdened, agonized heart of humanity, and listen to its painful wail

for help.

Go stand by the gates of hell, and hear the damned entreat you to go to their fathers’ houses

and bid their brothers and sisters and servants and masters not to come there.

Then look Christ in the face – Whose mercy you have professed to obey – and tell Him

whether you will join heart and soul and body and circumstances in the march to publish His

mercy to the world.

Prayerfully, there will be some that would accept this challenge and be prepared to hear!
